"Saving our History, Honoring our Past"

Welcome to the Cambridge Historical Society and Musum!

Our hours are:

Friday & Saturday 1-4pm

Step back in time and experience the rich tapestry of history woven into the very walls of the Cambridge house.

Constructed in 1869 by John Smith, an esteemed officer of the Cambridge Valley Bank, this architectural gem has witnessed the passage of time and stands as a testament to the legacy of those who shaped its story. In 1881, the residence found new ownership in the hands of William McKie, and later passed to his daughter, Katherine, a woman of exceptional accomplishments. A graduate of the Emma Willard School in Troy, NY, Katherine's influence extended beyond academia as a Chapter of DAR member, Director of the Mary McClellan Hospital, and founder of the hospital's Women's Auxiliary. Her indelible mark on the community echoes through the halls of the Cambridge house.

Transitioning through the hands of the McFarland family in 1929, the house found its true calling as a guardian of the past when deeded to the Cambridge Historical Society. Today, it stands as a living testament to our shared heritage, a place where the echoes of the past resonate with every creak of the floorboards and every ornate exterior molding.

Immerse yourself in the architectural splendor of a bygone era, marveling at the mansard roof, wrap-around verandah, and the intricate leaded glass windows of the front door. Step into the spacious hallway, where a beautifully curved stairway beckons you to explore the upper floors, while a period-framed, floor-to-ceiling mirror with a marble shelf reflects the elegance of days gone by.

By visiting the Cambridge house, you are not only stepping into history but also contributing to its preservation. Join us in saving our history and honoring our past, as we invite you to partake in events that celebrate the legacy encapsulated within these walls. Discover the stories that have shaped our community, and become a part of the living history that defines the Cambridge house.

Cambridge is a small town located in upstate New York that was first established in the late 1700s by farmers and Revolutionary War veterans. In the early 1800s, the town became a hub for manufacturing and trade, thanks to its location near the Battenkill River and the Erie Canal. Throughout the 19th century, Cambridge was known for its paper mills, textile factories, and iron foundries.

During the Civil War, many young men from Cambridge enlisted in the Union Army, and the town played an important role in the Underground Railroad, helping enslaved people escape to freedom in Canada. In the 20th century, Cambridge's economy shifted toward agriculture, and the town became known for its dairy farms and apple orchards.

Today, Cambridge is a charming small town with a rich history and a strong sense of community. Its downtown area is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and the town is home to a number of cultural and recreational attractions, including the Battenkill Valley Creamery, the Hubbard Hall Performing Arts Center, and the Cambridge Valley Trail.
